Let’s get this out of the way right away:
Shape: a 2D object (geometric or organic) that is flat. Looks like a sticker / cutout.
Form: a 3D object that shows more than one side. Often casts a shadow somewhere.
To make a 2D Shape in Photography:
1. Photograph a 2D object.
2. Photograph a 3D object straight on, directly from above, or directly below to give the illusion of flatness.
A successful shape emphasis photograph will look like a paper cutout.
To make a 3D Form in Photography:
- Photograph a 3D object that shows at least two sides. Buildings and objects with hard edges are great for this.
- Try not to photograph straight on. Photograph from an angle.
- Still life and buildings are easiest to capture many angles and sides.
Make sure to catch up on the Shape & Form
Your assignment:
Use your phone / tablet / camera (you may borrow a tablet / camera from the library)
and capture the following photographs that:
- Demonstrate good shape (make sure there is no 3D elements!)
- Demonstrate good form (try to make every object as 3-Dimensional as possible!)
- Hybrid both shape and form together.
(This one’s tricky! You might have to set-up your own image).
