Stop Motion

Create a story through Stop Motion that focuses on conflict and resolution.
It should be between 30-60 seconds

(around 50 pictures, every 10 seconds).

Step 1: PLAN YOUR STORY
I would like to see some planning in your Visual Journal / Website about your story.
– What is your story about (beginning middle and end)?
– Where are you going to photograph your stop motion?
– Props, items, costumes?

Step 2: SHOOT YOUR STORY ON A FRESH SD CARD

Please photograph this project on a SD card with no files to make sure everything stays in order.

  • TIP! Try to shoot each scene / location in one setting because lighting and perspective will change.

Step 3: PUT TOGETHER IN PHOTOSHOP

Follow along with this tutorial.

First! Create a Folder called “YOURNAME Stop Motion” and put everything in this folder.

Photoshop Tutorial:

Open Photoshop. Go to File -> Scripts -> Load Files into Stack
1

To find your files, click on the browse button.
2

Select all images and press OK.

3

Now we need to make sure our Timeline menu is on.
Go to Window -> Timeline.

4

With Timeline open, there is a menu at the bottom. Click on the arrow and make sure it says, “Create Frame Animation” – Then Click directly on the button.

5

If done right, it will load one image, like shown below.
Next, click on the square in the bottom right corner, where the red arrow is on the screenshot.
Select: Make Frames From Layers

6

All your images should be loaded now! BUT they are technically loaded backwards. Let’s fix that. Click the small rectangle again. This time select, “Reverse Frames.”

7

Click the square again, now select “Select All Frames”
(This will let us change the timing on all images at the same time.)

8

All frames will now be highlighted like shown below.
With everything selected (make sure EVERYTHING IS SELECTED) Go to the very first frame. Click on the tiny arrow on the frame box (right where that tiny red arrow is on my picture) and select the time o.1 seconds.

9

Press Play but hitting the play Icon at the bottom of the screen to preview your video.

Feel free to make your Stop Motion slower by changing the timing if desired. Just make sure all frames are selected.

10

your video will loop (continuously play without stopping)
Don’t worry, it won’t loop when we export it.

When happy with the speed and everything works, time to export as a video.
Go to File -> Export ->Render Video….

11

IMPORTANT. PLEASE CHECK ALL SETTINGS BEFORE PRESSING RENDER.

Name: Your First name and last name
Select Folder: Make sure you save it to the same folder you saved all your images.
Format: H.264
Size: HDV/HDTV 720P
Frame Rate: Document Frame Rate 30 fps

Press Render when everything is set like this picture.

12

After Pressing Render, you will get a Exporting Video Progress Bar. Depending on how long your video is, this may take a few minutes.

13

Your video should be saved in the folder that you put all images in. Click on it and watch it play!
